Investigate the Scientific Method at home! |
Supplies:
Two different types of liquid bubble solution: Super Bubbles and Regular Bubbles (these can be purchased at any toy store, grocery store, or convenience store)
Dishes or cups to pour the bubble solution in
10 oz. of water
Two different types of bubble wands
Paper and something to write with
Instructions:
1. Head outside on a bright, sunny day. Don’t choose a day that’s too windy, or your bubbles will fly away too quickly!
2. Before you start blowing bubbles, make a chart with four sections. One section will be for the Super Bubbles without water, one section will be for the Regular Bubbles without water, and the other two sections will be for each type of bubbles, but mixed with water. Divide each section into 10 different squares, so you’ll have ten bubbles of each type to look at.
3. Pour a small amount of each bubble solution onto a plate or into a cup
4. Blow at least 10 bubbles with just the regular solution. Are the bubbles coming out the same size? Or are the Super Bubbles larger? Record your findings on your chart.
5. Add 5 oz. water to each bubble mixture and blow 10 more bubbles of each kind. Does the added water make a difference in the size of the bubbles? If so, discuss why. If not, then what makes the two types of bubble solution different? Predict what the bubble sizes would be if you mixed the two together, or worked with regular dishwashing or laundry soap. What do you suppose makes the soaps different?
Kids Clubbers Tip:
-The same kind of experiments can be done by collecting things outside such as stones, leaves or branches. Think about how weather conditions can affect where you could find each item, and why each item is the shape and color that it is. You can predict many things about nature depending on what you collect outside!
